Inspiring Collaboration Through Architecture

At 21 Heng Mui Keng Terrace, the NUS Enterprise i3 building stands as a reflection of Singapore’s commitment to innovation and knowledge exchange. As the entrepreneurial hub of the National University of Singapore, the space fosters creativity through the design of its shared environments. The porte-cochère, a transitional space between the interior and exterior, required both visual refinement and acoustic performance. Alüm Clip-In perforated aluminium ceiling panels were chosen to create a surface that balances sound, texture, and light; improves the experience of movement and collaboration.

The Vision and the Collaboration

The project brought together NUS, AWP Architects, Lincotrade & Associates Pte Ltd, and Aid Pte Ltd under a shared goal: to deliver a high-performance environment that supports interaction and focus. The ceiling was not treated as a background element but as an active participant in the building’s architectural language.

Architectural Direction

AWP Architects envisioned a ceiling that could soften sound and harmonize with the brushed metal and glass palette of the space. The perforated clip-in system was selected for its precision, durability, and flexibility in accommodating lighting and service layouts.

Material Specification

The Alüm Clip-In panels were fabricated in brushed stainless steel with custom perforations and integrated acoustic insulation. Each ceiling panel provides controlled sound absorption, ensuring speech clarity while minimizing reverberation.

Construction and Coordination

Lincotrade & Associates led the installation, working closely with Aid Pte Ltd to align the ceiling grid with lighting and structural systems. The result is a ceiling that appears effortlessly refined yet is technically complex beneath its surface.

Performance Meets Architectural Refinement

In the NUS Enterprise i3 porte-cochère, performance and design converge. The Alüm Clip-In ceiling system transforms what could have been a transitional space into an environment that promotes interaction and clarity.

Each aluminium ceiling panel incorporates fine perforations that improves acoustic performance, supported by internal insulation layers. The stainless-steel finish reflects daylight from the entrance façade, creating a subtle gradient that changes throughout the day. This controlled reflectivity reinforces a sense of openness while reducing glare and echo—qualities essential in a space that connects academic, entrepreneurial, and public functions.

Detailing, Installation, and Longevity

Attention to detail defines the success of this installation. Every perforation pattern, panel joint, and structural interface contributes to both function and visual continuity.

Precision Installation

The clip-in system allows each panel to be removed individually, facilitating future maintenance and service access. The concealed grid maintains a smooth appearance, an essential feature in architectural aluminium systems for high-traffic public areas.

Acoustic Control

Aid Pte Ltd integrated sustainable acoustic panels and insulation behind the perforations, improving sound absorption without altering the visual intent. This combination delivers acoustic balance in an open and reflective environment.

Surface and Finish

The brushed stainless-steel coating improves durability and maintains a sophisticated appearance that complements the building’s architectural language. The finish resists corrosion and discolouration, ensuring long-term performance even in Singapore’s humid climate.

Environmental Considerations

The ceiling system incorporates low VOC materials and recyclable aluminium building materials, contributing to a healthier indoor air quality. This aligns with sustainable construction principles and supports institutional environmental goals.

NUS Enterprise i3 and the Spirit of Innovation

NUS Enterprise i3 represents how thoughtful design can inspire collaboration and innovation. Through the Alüm Clip-In perforated ceiling system, architecture becomes a framework for connection—quietly enabling communication and creativity through acoustic and visual clarity.

The partnership between NUS, AWP Architects, Lincotrade, and Aid Pte Ltd highlights the potential of architectural aluminium systems in educational and research environments. By combining precision engineering, sustainable acoustic performance, and refined materiality, Alüm continues to define how modern institutions express their identity through design.

At NUS i3, every perforation, panel, and reflection contributes to a shared rhythm of collaboration—where material performance meets the pursuit of innovation.
